Follow these common sense tips when looking for a work at home job online.

• Research anything that sounds too good to be true. Go to your favorite search engine and type in the company name and the word "scam", (e.g. companyname+scam). Check the results for any scam reports. If you are still not sure, join an active work-at-home forum and ask questions about the company.

• Never pay for a work at home job. Anything requiring a fee to get started is not a real job. You wouldn't pay to start a job offline, and the same applies for online or work at home jobs.

• Never pay for a "directory" or list of work at home employers. These lists are usually outdated and often the companies listed are not even hiring home based workers.

• Most legitimate jobs will require some kind of skills and/or previous experience. Any ads or job listings that say "no experience necessary" with promises of earning lots of money are most likely not legitimate jobs.

• When applying for a job make sure your resume is the best it can be. A well-written resume and cover letter can help to make you stand out from other applicants.

• When applying for a job make sure you follow all instructions given in the job listing. If asked to email with a specific subject line or to paste your resume in the body of an email, then do so. Failure to follow simple instructions could result in your not being considered for the job.
